Those who know Gerard ’t Hooft mostly as an influential researcher and teacher may be surprised to find out that his talents, interests and activities span a range far wider than physics alone. Gerard has always been a prolific creator and collector of many interesting things: opinion pieces, essays, drawings, photographs, and various curiosities. This section of the website is dedicated to these collections and creations, which are all preserved in Gerard’s own words (Dutch or English).

Ode to ’t Hooft: “Here is what Frederick Reines wrote on a napkin in a restaurant on Balboa Island, Newport Beach, California, back in 1981.”

Wager on supersymmetry: “In the year 2000, at Copenhagen, many physicists were bold and optimistic about supersymmetry. Here is a wager, duly recorded. The date of “discovery of supersymmetry” was set at June 21, 2010. I would be ready to give them another six or so years, but then I will politely approach my susy friends to inquire about the bottle of cognac.”
